Greetings fellow /// devotees,

I own three ///s, 3 Profiles and 3 monitors, mostly thanks to Sun
Remarketing. One Profile and one /// are inoperative. Software includes
Quark Word Juggler (word processing), Profile and Profile Report (data
base). In 1987 I bought a Mac and found someone with software and a
cable which enabled me to transfer a Word Juggler file to the Mac
(MacWrite).

Fifteen years later, I have a Power Computing Mac and would like to be
able to transfer the Profile data to it in to a FileMaker Pro 4
environment.

My old Mac was replaced with a Mac Plus (I still have both). I was able
to transfer PageMaker 3.1 files to the Power Mac but had to go through
two stages to do it (version 4.0 to 6.5). MacWrite and Claris files
transfer more easily in to AppleWorks. I do not have data base software
on the Mac Plus. Word Juggler was apparenly available for it at one time
but with Apple ///'s original problems, it didn't survive.

Does anyone have any ideas on the feasibility of moving data from the
/// to the Power Mac?

Thanks.

Pete Taylor

I 2nd that wow! What I did to get stuff off MY Profile: I loaded BSD
on a Mac IIci, used it as a gateway then loaded communication software
on the Apple /// (dang it has been a while I forget what the program
is called only I DO remember the /// is seen as a VT-52 which is a
proto VT100 sort of..). I had a serial cord from the /// to the Mac.
On the /// side I ran XMODEM on the telnet service I have it accepts
this as a FTP. I am not enough of a wiz to know HOW it works, just
that it did.. From there I could then download to the machine of
choice via a web browser.

should be able to import tab or comma separated text into a Filemaker

It's really good to see this list come alive!

Who knows, maybe someday I'll take my /// out of the closet, plug it in
and see what happens.

Meanwhile, I have been inspired to take the WAP web stuff <
http://www.wap.org/a3/default.html> clean it up a bit and convert it
to a Word document. Once I finish it, if there is interest and WAP
allows it, I could sent it out to folks who are interested.

It would be better if you converted it to something truly

What a flurry of activity! For years nothing, then BOOM! All the
Apple /// users crawled back out of their holes.

I just checked my old e-mails to check a date. I got my Apple /// in
May 2000 off of Ebay. I believe that's about the same time that I
subscribed to this list. I added a Profile, extra external floppy
drives and a Silentype thermal printer later. I also got some
manuals, magazines and some internal cards for it. Oh yeah & Quark
Catalyst. It took me awhile to figure out how to access the hard
drive. When I did, I found the files from a horse farm of all
things! I've got 2 Apple /// monitors. I really got a kick out of
running a diagnostics program and hearing the Apple /// speak. Not
very loud, what was it-"I'm Okay?" I had to get that Silentype
because I thought it was cool that it had a jack for that type of
printer, no card required. Trivia: Silentype = first Apple printer. I
ran off a hard copy of the contents of the Profile on it.

After collecting a ton of Macs since 1984, I started collecting the
Apple //'s. Then I realized that I had to have a Sara. I'd still like
a Lisa some day, but my life began with the original 128k Mac in
March 1984. I've still got it. I had it upgraded several times and I
have fixed the power supply twice on it myself. But I think that a
Mac SE looks cooler than the original!

I also collect other Classic computers as well as vintage computer
books and magazines. I have a whole collection of books related to
the history of Apple Computer. I love reading about how Apple got
started . To me it's practically like hearing the story of Jesus'
birth every Christmas, I never tire of it!

Unfortunately I haven't used my Apple /// much. I am self employed
and I have it at my office, but I never seem to have any spare time
to use it. Or monkey around with any of my computers. I have a huge
storage area upstairs that is loaded with my computer stuff. I've got
a few of them set up but a lot more on the floor gathering dust!

I can't promise that I would answer every e-mail, but
please-everybody post to this list whether or not you send personal
e-mails. That way we can all enjoy the dialogue.

Like all on this list, I'm pleased to see some activity.

Last year, a new Apple III owner mailed me about accessing software
installed on his Profile. Between us, we guessed that the software had
been installed using Quark Catalyst but he didn't own the required boot
floppy. I got as far as scanning and OCRing the docs for Catalyst but
stalled when it came to creating disk images. Does anyone know which
version of CopyII Plus has parameter settings that allows the Catalyst
disks to be imaged or copied? Are apps installed by Quark Catalyst onto
a Profile keyed to the serial number of the installation/boot disk?

Thanks in advance,

Phil

Copy II plus would not copy Catalyst boot disks nor would Locksmith if I
remember correctly. What you need is EDD III (Essential Data Duplicator)
and I don't have it, sorry.

That being said, there are plenty of unprotected Catalyst copies, I
hear. As of myself I use the built-in selector program included with
BOS3.

Michel.

Hi Phil,

I don't know the answer to this question. But I wish that I did
because I think that I am in the same situation. I have a used
Profile HD and I'm not sure if I can access the files that I find
listed there. I find evidence of Catalyst being installed. I also
bought Catalyst off of ebay and I'm wondering if I can use that to
access my files. I'm pretty much a clueless newbie on the Apple ///.
But I do find it fascinating, - the "UnPC!"

Hi to all,

I'm certain to be THE ONE (modestly) that last year asked to use
softwares on a Profile and A/// recently owned. Since I had no answers,

my Apple /// went to sleep... I'm so glad to see new activity on this
great
list.
My name is Renaud and I live close to Paris (FR). Is anyone can tell me
how to get copy (unprotect or protect, don't matter) of Catalyst, I'll
feel like a
kid in front of a Christmas tree ;-)).
Now, at this time, I've 2 Apple /// and 2 Profile. One of the Profile
has great
soft inside (Apple Writer ///, some disk utilities, Omnis 3, etc.).
I'm dying to use it, to recover the pleasure to use an old great
computer...
Thanks to anyone, thanks to be online again.

I am amazed people are still on this list! The last time this list was
really active, we still had Bob what's his name of BOS fame, along with
Dr. Something at UWVa, and the WAP guys. The original users' group.
They are mostly gone, I think.

I think I can copy Quark Catalyst disks with the Central Point Option
Board on my IBM PC-XT 286. It can copy Apple II disks and most
copy-protected disks just fine, since it reads the disks bit by bit at
a low level.

I use Selector /// on my ///+, but I'll try to make a test copy and see
if it works.

Hi All : Yes I can help with that --- I will look into it after
Thanksgiving , as I am going to my sister to fix her XP computer ( Extra
Pork
windows). If you do not hear from me --- just bug me with an email ---
as I
may get lost working on cp/m for my Coleco Adam or my Commodore 128
cp/m.

Postscript : The Washington Apple Pie has disk for for this stuff --
of
which I have. I will most likely take profile from my Lisa that has
Xenix on
it and setup on my ///+ .
more later

Hi All :
I found my Catalyst A3 disk -- this is an unprotected one.
Ver =  2.0.1.

There was a problem restoring/installing the application again after the
profile died, this is fixed on this disk.

bill ..

P.S. I can email an disk2file image to anyone needing it.

As others have said, it's great to see activity on the list. Hope you are
all doing well, and your Apple ///'s are doing the same.

My Apple /// is still fully reliable. It's still fun to see the reaction of
visitors when they see this 20 year old machine (with its impeccable
keyboard) acting as the console for Linux clusters and a few large Unix
machines. When I point out its capabilities and its date of manufacture,
they're even more amazed. It's not a flashy system, to be sure, but there
are still lessons taught by the Apple /// that many software developers
today could stand re-learning.

Some list administravia:

1) I have had to do some pruning since many members over time have changed
ISP's, changed positions, etc. and have invalid forwarding addresses. If
you know members of the Apple /// community that are not receiving the list,
please let them know it is still here and they are welcome to subscribe.

To subscribe, please send email to majordomo at altair.com and include:

subscribe apple3-l

in the body of the message.

2) To control SPAM, the list only allows members to post. People posting
from addresses that I do not have on the post list will generate a bounced
message. If the message is relevant to the list content, I manually forward
it back to the list. If you find yourself posting from a different address
(example, work vs. home) please send me a private e-mail message and I will
add any additional addresses you wish to the post allow list. This will
prevent delays in getting your posts out to the community.

If I can help in any way please don't hestitate to let me know. Have a
great day!

Jeff

Hi All : Yes I can help with that --- I will look into it after
Thanksgiving , as I am going to my sister to fix her XP computer ( Extra Pork
windows). If you do not hear from me --- just bug me with an email --- as I
may get lost working on cp/m for my Coleco Adam or my Commodore 128 cp/m.

Postscript : The Washington Apple Pie has disk for for this stuff -- of
which I have. I will most likely take profile from my Lisa that has Xenix on
it and setup on my ///+ .
more later

I am amazed people are still on this list! The last time this list was
really active, we still had Bob what's his name of BOS fame, along with
Dr. Something at UWVa, and the WAP guys. The original users' group.
They are mostly gone, I think.

I think I can copy Quark Catalyst disks with the Central Point Option
Board on my IBM PC-XT 286. It can copy Apple II disks and most
copy-protected disks just fine, since it reads the disks bit by bit at
a low level.

I use Selector /// on my ///+, but I'll try to make a test copy and see
if it works.

I've lost track of Bob Consorti too.. I tried to track him down a couple
of times but addresses and emails didn't work. I think he's still on the
West Coast but I can't really say. It may take some more digging...

----------
Here's an updated article about the Apple /// SIG at Washington Apple Pi
if any of you are interested - I updated it for our 25th anniversary
edition of the WAP Journal that is coming out next year.

FYI - we still list the /// SIG but it has not met in many years.. we
still maintain our PD library tho and I still have one of the best
archives around, along with David Craig - who is a true Apple collector.

If any of you are interested in contributing an article about how you
are using your /// still or how you did use it or why you still have
one, I'd love to have it for our WAP Journal.

The Macs are moving ahead so fast, the institutional memory of the old
original Apples is rapidly going away... and we need to keep the flame
burning!

Dave

AN UPDATED HISTORY OF THE APPLE /// AND WASHINGTON APPLE PI

By

David Ottalini
Long-Time Apple /// SIG Co-Chairman

AUTHOR?S NOTE: The original version of this article was published in the
WAP Journal in late 1988 as part of our 10 year anniversary celebration.
Now, as we look forward to our 25th anniversary, I?m happy to offer this
newly updated version. Enjoy!

WAP was barely a year and a half old when the Apple /// was introduced
at the National Computer Conference in Anaheim in May, 1980. The /// was
the first computer to be designed in-house by Apple Computer. It was
supposed to be a replacement for the Apple ][, which Apple was afraid
would not continue to sell well. The /// was specifically designed as a
business machine and Apple sold it in "bundles" with software and
hardware.
For Washington Apple Pi, the first mention of the Apple /// occurred in
February, 1981 when Burton S. Chambers III wrote an article entitled
"Flavors: Little Tidbits." Orange was the color of his /// comments. He
said that he wanted to wait before making a final decision on the
machine until there was more software and the bugs were worked out ("I'm
sure it will be a useful machine some day"). /// user Mark Cheren wrote
the following month ("Here So Slowly Comes The Apple ///") that he had
gone through three Apple ///s (due to early production problems) but
still felt the machine had excellent potential. He wrote: "So, have I
made a mistake? Frankly, I don't know yet."
The first call for a /// SIG within Washington Apple Pi was made by
Charles N. Dow, in the April, 1981 Journal ("The Not-Too-Slow Apple ///
Is Great!?). Dow, untainted by the Apple ][, was a bit more exuberant
over the /// and its possibilities, writing that "the Apple ///, I have
confidence, will be a great business asset, developed from the
experiences gained from the Apple I, II and all other sources."
It took ten months more, but in February, 1982, Dow (the first "Pro Temp
Chairman?) gave the official announcement that a /// SIG within WAP had
been formed ("Update On the 'Big Apple' ///"):
So herewith we unilaterally establish a group and invite all of the
members who are interested in learning more about the newest APPLE and
the smallest Users Group (there are six members that I have been in
touch with personally).

The June, 1982 Apple /// article by Ronald Askew reported the third
meeting of the SIG occurred April 15th at the Walter Reed Army Medical
Center. He wrote that 11 of the 20 ///ers in WAP had attended. = Askew
also reported that SIG librarian Michael Konvalinka had "collected
virtually every important article, ad and publication referencing the
Apple /// and relevant hardware and software."
In March, 1983 came the first, and only, complete review of the /// done
in the WAP Journal. "A Report Card On The Apple ///: Does It Merit A
Passing Grade? was written by William C. Jacobson. The bottom line for
him was that the (now) two-year-old Apple /// got a "qualified passing
grade." He was particularly upset that the /// had such a poor
implementation of CP/M and called for an upgraded emulation disk to
handle 64K and upper and lower case.
By May of the following year, Bill Hershey had been elevated to SIG
Chairman. He was the first "official" leader of the SIG. In July,
Hershey reported that the SIG now had 73 members! He also reported that
an Apple Rep assured the members of Apple's "continuing commitment to
the ///."
Midway through 1984, the SIG had gained a Co-Chairman in Jerry Chandler.
Bill Hershey officially made way for Bill Rosenmund as co-chair in
January, 1985. Throughout that year, SIG Secretary Charlene Ryan kept
the ///'s flame burning in the Journal. She reported in January that
despite the bad news about the /// being discontinued, the SIG was alive
and well and members felt the /// was still a great computer. Over the
course of the year, the SIG continued to meet, held a few tutorials and
even surveyed members by mail. June, 1985 marked the debut of this
author in the WAP Journal. Over the years, he published many, many
articles about the /// - of of which are available on disk in the ///
SIG Public Domain Library.
By 1986, the author had also taken over for Bill Rosenmund as co-chair
and Jerry Chandler moved on. Tom Bartkiewitz ultimately agreed to
co-chair. In July, 1986 SIG Librarian Al Lambert announced our first
four public domain disks. As of 1997, there are some 250 disks still
available!

Early October, 1987 saw a prominent role for the /// SIG at the Phase
III Conference and Exhibition in Chicago. Sponsored by The Third Apple
Users group (TAU) it was the only Apple /// convention ever held. One of
the discussions was about ThreeWorks - a series of databases for the ///
developed by this author. The primary data base - a bibliography of
Apple /// articles - was recently converted into Filemaker Pro and
should now be available for download from our Explorer Home Page and the
TCS.
One of the proudest accomplishments of the /// SIG in the 1990s =was
serving as a catalyst for development of /// products. BOS /// - the
first upgrade to the SOS Operating System in 10 years (written by Bob
Consorti of On Three fame) was a wonderful achievement.
It was done with the financial help of WAP and ATUNC, the =Apple Three
Users of Northern California, along with many individual ///ers. A
driver for the 1.4 mb superdrive was developed, as was a ?universal?
SCSI driver. In 1997, the SIG successfully worked to develop an updated
power supply for the /// with Dr. Stephen Buggy. The Apple II community
pointed to those achievements as arguments for continued development of
Apple II products.
Since the late 80?s, we?ve seen a number of good Apple /// =friends come
and go. Paul Campbell, Seth Mize, Bob Sambolin, Steve Truax, and Dave
and Joan Jernigan are among those who were able to keep the /// a part
of their computer lives into the late 90s.
Paul especially deserves credit for his many years of unwavering support
for the ///. Living in Detroit, he drove with his growing family twice a
year for a number of years to attend the Computer Show and Sale. He
served as /// SIG Co-Chair for many years.
The /// SIG no longer exists as a group. But I continue to answer calls
for help even today. The /// has now become something of a collector?s
item and there is a steady demand for machines ? just check EBay. Our
public domain library continues to sell disks to folks all over the
world. WAP is recognized as the ?last bastion? of =support for SARA. Do
a search on the Web and see how many hits you get ? the Apple /// will
live a long life on the Internet.
I have even been working on a /// CD as time permits that would include
a central depository for /// information. An Apple /// discussion group
remains on the WAP TCS and also continues on the Internet at
APPLE3-L at altair.com.
It?s hard to believe that the Apple /// has been an orphan =machine for
some 20 years now. Still used as an example of bad decision-making by
Apple, she deserves better. As a computer, the /// was a groundbreaking
machine. Many of Apples best people worked on its development, many
great companies wrote software for it, and many people around the world
purchased it.
For those of us who did buy and use the /// (and I still own =one!), we
remember it as an excellent computer that was ahead of its time. It is
now a part of Apple history. But SARA helped shape the life of many,
many people and bridged the Apple II world to the Macintosh in a way few
will ever realize.
